Created in 1957, the Saarinen Tulip Table envelopes the thought and theory behind one of the 20th century's great architects. Constructed with a cast aluminum base, the Saarinen Table flows from top to bottom with a fluid exchange of lines. Saarinen used a variety of bases and tops for various interiors during his career. The 28" Round Saarinen Tulip Table is a favorite as it can be used in a variety of spaces, but is most commonly used as a small dining table.
In the creation of Saarinen’s Pedestal Series, his desire was to work with a single material in order to devise unity within the design. Saarinen's first choice was plastic, but he had to wait for “the day when the plastic industry has advanced to the point where the chair can consist of a sole material, as designed.” Instead of plastic, Saarinen used cast aluminum for the table base of his Pedestal Tables, while using stone or wood for the tops. For the tulip chairs, he used molded fiberglass for the shells and cast aluminum for the bases. Though the materials are different, they do provide a singular flowing aesthetic to the Saarinen Table.
This Saarinen Table has a specially lacquered cast aluminum base in white or black and stands 28 1/4" in height. The Saarinen Tulip Table base is finished with a clear protective finish to resist scratches, stains, and scuffs.
